alpha women's resource center mobile unit

I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:19

Why a Medical Mobile Unit?

In 2016, the Alpha Women’s Resource Center recognized the need to provide pregnancy testing, limited diagnostic ultrasounds, and prenatal education for women who may not have transportation to our facility in Jackson.

Many in the rural area are dependent on others for transportation to purchase necessary supplies, pay bills, get to health care facilities, and meet other needs.

In 2017, an Image Clear Ultrasound (ICU) Medical Mobile Unit was purchased by the Alpha Women’s Resource Center to meet the needs of these individuals.

This medical mobile unit is a self-contained mobile pregnancy center, and provides the following:

  • Options Counseling
  • Educational Resources
  • Limited Ultrasound
  • Lab Grade Pregnancy Testing
  • Prenatal & Parenting Classes
  • Community Referrals

The total number of individual clients served on the mobile since we started in May of 2017 through June of 2019, is 110 and we have had a total of 216 services provided. (this number includes individuals who have come multiple times).

It takes time for people to become comfortable with coming to a mobile unit, so we try to advertise well and have support from the local communities when we bring the medical mobile unit into an area.

Up until January of 2019, the mobile medical unit covered sites in Clarke and Washington counties. With grant funds obtained through the Community Foundation of South Alabama (CFSA), we were able to add a site in Monroeville.

This two-year grant allows us to visit Monroe county and determine if there is a client base, to develop partnerships with local communities, churches, and individuals in the county, and to acquire the additional funding needed to continue providing services to this area.

Serving Monroeville once a month, we have been able to serve 23 individuals in the past six months.

We know there is a need for pregnancy related services and that it requires financial and volunteer support to continue providing for our clients after the grant funds are no longer available.

The next area we are targeting Is Choctaw county. As financial support for the medical mobile unit increases, we will expand our outreach, ensuring that women, men, and children will have access to quality prenatal and postnatal care.

Consider this sobering statistic: Alabama has been ranked as the worst state to have a baby based on infant and maternal health as major health factors. Alabama has one of the lowest number of OB-GYNs per capita physicians serving a population of 2 million women according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Thirty-three of Alabama’s 67 counties do not have any OB GYNs, and few hospitals offer labor and delivery services. (Information cited from WalletHub Sept. 2014.

Did That Touch Your Heart?

The cost of a new mobile ultrasound unit including the ultrasound machine is $166,000.

While this may seem to be a huge financial investment, the return on the investment is eternal in terms of lives that will be impacted for the Glory of God. Will you GO with us to reach more women, men, and children bringing them the needed resources, education and hope they so desperately need?

Our prayer is that you will answer with a resounding YES!
